“If you don’t know history, then you don’t know anything.
You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.”
― Michael Crichton
History of Oracle Cards
In classical antiquity, an oracle was a person considered to provide wise and insightful counsel or prophetic predictions inspired by the Gods. It is a toll for divination. Oracles have existed in human form in every culture around the world. Oracle cards are cards used for divination, fortune-telling, astrology, and spiritual guidance. They are a modern version of tarot cards. Card readings have been used by people throughout the centuries to find meaningful answers to questions about their lives, their spiritual path, and to plan for their future.
The oldest oracle decks are from the seventeen hundreds. People used playing cards or Tarot and then it progressed to a combination between conversation cards and playing cards. Oracle Cards developed out of Tarot Cards. The first Oracle Deck is said to have been developed by Marie Anne Adelaide Lenormand. She was born in Normandy but travelled around Europe. She was a well-known fortune-teller in her days and was able to use many different types of Oracles. Then in the later half of the 20th century, Oracle Cards began to spread and become popular.
‘’Oracle cards provide powerful messages
that encourage positive thinking.’’
Oracle Decks differ from Tarot Decks mainly because they do not necessarily follow the traditional suits, they do not have as many cards, and there are no personifications as such. Oracle cards provide powerful messages that encourage positive thinking, while Tarot Cards are more specific and tell you a full story, the positive and the negative.
Choosing your Oracle Cards
There are so many different decks, and they will come into your life at different times and places. There are no coincidences in life, so just choose a deck that resonates with you – simply put, this means you feel good holding it and you love how the images look. Just follow your heart and it will be the right one for you in that moment.
Some people believe that your first deck must be purchased by someone else, rather than yourself. Although that was my case, I believe it is just a superstition and I would encourage you to do whatever you feel drawn to.
Getting to know your oracle deck
The first thing you can do to connect with your new Oracle Deck is to spend some time with it.
🔮 You can put it in your handbag and carry it around for a week or so until your energy is infused in the deck.
🔮 You can take your deck to your favourite natural place and do a small ceremony with some crystals, candles, and essences.
🔮 You can sit in meditation for 15 minutes to celebrate the welcoming of the deck into your life.
🔮 You can flip through the deck and contemplate the cards. Take notice of the cards that catch your eye. Each card has a different energy. You are getting to know them, just like you would a person. So, accept the energy of the cards to present themselves to you. They will speak to you in feelings, you might even hear words in your head, or maybe you will think of a song. Don’t ask yourself why, just accept their presence and how they are.
Cleansing your Oracle Deck and connecting to the Higher Realms
To cleanse your deck from previous energy, simply set your intention and blow or tap the deck three times. Place the deck on your heart and call upon your guides, the guide of the person you are reading to, and take yourself to a calm, meditative state. You might choose to say a small prayer before you start using the cards to be a clear, pure channel of love and wisdom from the Universe and to be enlightened with the truth and only the truth.
A sample prayer can be something like:
‘’Dear God within me, please allow me to see, hear, know, feel, and smell the truth and only the truth. Allow me to be a clear and pure channel with love as my guide. Please allow me to help others and myself for the highest good of all’’.
Now your Deck is activated, and you are ready to work with your Oracle.
Reading your oracle cards
Oracles are user-friendly, you can use them to do daily readings for yourself and others, and unlike Tarot, you can do a one-card reading and it will make perfect sense, however, the most popular oracle card spread is the 3-card draw.
The question
The clearer the question is, the clearer the answer will be. In forming your question, try to avoid Yes-No questions, as they leave your Guides with little room to open your mind to new ideas. Instead, ask to be shown the likely result of a particular action, or the understanding needed to deal with a situation effectively. Ask to be shown someone’s true character or real intent. You can also ask where your true joy lies or what is blocking it.
Shuffling
It is time to shuffle the cards. If you are reading for another person, you can ask them to shuffle the deck while you sit with the intention and they infuse their energies into the cards. This step is entirely up to the reader. I change and vary my style depending on what I am guided to do, and I don’t have any rules on how I shuffle or spread my cards.
Three Card Spread
Be clear on the method you choose, so your guides can send you a clear answer
💫 Past / Present / Future
💫 The nature of your problem / The cause / The solution
💫 Situation / Action / Outcome
💫 What I think about the situation / What I feel / What I do
💫 What you aspire to / What is standing in your way / How you can overcome this
💫 Strengths / Weaknesses / Advice
💫 Opportunities / Challenges / Outcome
If you feel like you need more clarity on a card or situation, just draw upon another card for extra guidance.
Cultivating your intuition
Be open to what you receive and trust that your Guides know what the receiver needs to hear at this moment. Tune in with your body. Pay attention to what you hear, feel, see, know, and smell. You might have a sense that is more accessible for you to receive information. If you are very visual, notice where your eyes take you. Are you looking at a specific part of the card, are you noticing a certain colour more than others, or are you looking at something outside of the reading? Do you see something in your mind? Once you start the reading, everything is part of it, even if the mailman knocks on your door, or you hear an ambulance siren in the distance. Let it flow and trust your feelings.
Cleansing your Oracle in between readings
💫 Smudging is a powerful method to cleanse your cards. You can smudge them with sage or any other herb. Chicory and Palo Santo are very powerful to cleanse your Oracles.
💫 Alternatively, place a few drops of Lemongrass or Melaleuca in your hands, rub your hands together and place the cards in between your hands. Blow your cards and they are now ready for the next reading. You can also slide them quickly above the mist of a diffuser.
💫 Another method is to use a crystal or an orgone plate. Place the cards on the table and place the crystal on top of the cards. Leave it for about 15 minutes or until your next reading.
Always give thanks to your guides and the guides of the receiver.
And may you find peace in the love your guides have for you.
